Validation and comparison of turbulence models for predicting wakes of vertical axis wind turbines

چکیده

Abstract Vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) array design requires adequate modelling of the wakes to model flow throughout and, therefore, power output turbines in array. This paper investigates how accurately different turbulence models using 2D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations can estimate near and far VAWTs determine an approach towards accurate for design. Three experiments from literature are chosen as baselines validation, with these representing wake turbine. Five URANS were due their common potential usage VAWT CFD: k – ω SST, SST LRN, SSTI, transition l . In addition, lifting line-free vortex (LLFWV) was tested alternative CFD where it appropriate use. The results turbulent kinetic energy vorticity compared first experiment, whilst streamwise cross-stream velocity used other two experiments. It found that none or LLFVW produced estimations within methodology tested, however, closest estimations. Further adjustments required improve accuracy large impact on including use 3D CFD, adjustment surface roughness, inlet characteristics.

Inverse Design of Blade Shapes for Vertical Axis Wind Turbines

An inverse design process is applied to determine blade shapes used in vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs). The method is based on the modified Garabedian-McFadden technique that uses the deviation of the pressure distribution or the velocity distribution on the surface from a target pressure or velocity distribution, and modifies the blade surface in order to reduce this deviation. The method ...

Application of Circulation Controlled Blades for Vertical Axis Wind Turbines

The blades of a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) rotor see an inconsistent angle of attack through its rotation. Consequently, VAWT blades generally use symmetrical aerofoils with a lower lift-to-drag ratio than cambered aerofoils tailored to maximise horizontal axis wind turbine rotor performance. This paper considers the feasibility of circulation controlled (CC) VAWT blades, using a tangent...
